MAUD HIXSON
Maud Hixson is a renowned jazz vocalist based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She is celebrated for her interpretations of the Great American Songbook and lesser-known compositions. Hailed as “gently virtuosic” by All About Jazz, Maud has performed at prestigious venues such as the Guthrie Theater and Park Square Theater in Minnesota and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in New York
Maud has collaborated with notable musicians, including Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, and received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation. Her latest recording, dedicated to the music of her mentor, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, earned her a 2024 Bistro Award.
RICK CARLSON
Rick Carlson is a highly respected jazz pianist based in Minnesota. He has been prominent in the Twin Cities jazz scene for over three decades. Rick is known for his deep understanding of jazz traditions and ability to bring a unique touch to every performance.
Wolverines Jazz Band: Since 1980, Rick has been the pianist for the Wolverines Jazz Band and Trio. As an accompanist and musical director, he is a sought-after accompanist for many vocalists. He has served as musical director for various concerts and theater productions in the Twin Cities. Rick taught himself to play the piano by studying the works of legends like Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
Rick’s style is heavily influenced by the stride piano techniques of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson and the swing sensibilities of Basie and Ellington. His playing is characterized by a buoyant and rhythmic approach that adds a lively energy to his performances. Rick frequently collaborates with his wife, vocalist Maud Hixson. Together, they have performed at numerous venues and events, bringing classic jazz standards to life.
