The Manhattan Transfer’s
Bentyne Sings Sondheim at MacPhail
Cheryl Bentyne has been an annual visitor to the Twin Cities performing with her vocal colleagues, Janis, Alan, and Trist of The Manhattan Transfer. The 39-year veteran soprano of the Transfer has garnered 10 Grammy awards as a performer and arranger with the iconic vocal quartet.
Ms. Bentyne will appear in Antonello Hall at the McPhail Center for Music on September 25th at 7:00pm, premiering the release of her solo album, “ReArrangements Of Shadows” featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim in a preview to his 90th milestone. Ms. Bentyne will be supported by Twin Cities instrumentalists Steven Hobert (piano), Graydon Peterson (bass), and Matt Edlund (drums).
Holiday Special Features Local Participant
Ms. Bentyne is extending her Twin Cities stay to film an international holiday special at SPNN Studios in St. Paul. The Behind The Mic production features performances of
eight vocal groups from Slovenia, Philippines, Denmark, France, Sweden, England, Brazil Canada, and the U.S.
The Niskas, a vocal threesome from Shakopee, is one of eight vocal groups participating in the holiday special representing Minnesota. As members of Five By Design, Lorie, Kurt, and Terrence Niska have appeared with hundreds of symphony orchestras from the Minnesota Orchestra to the Boston Pops. The Niskas’ music video contribution is their arrangement of “Silent Night” featuring a collaboration with Minnesota Orchestra principal trumpet, Manny Laureano and classical guitarist Thomas Levandowski.
Ms. Bentyne will close the special in a performance of “Christmas Time Is Here” accompanied by the 42 vocalists on a virtual video wall. The Worldwide Holiday Special will debut broadcast December 1st on the Behind The Mic YouTube Channel and the Saint Paul Neighborhood Network.
